ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hard and soft magic systems

So kiddo, have you ever heard of magic? It’s like special powers that people in stories can use to do amazing things like making things disappear, flying or even making things appear out of nowhere.

There are different types of magic, and we call them “hard” and “soft” magic systems.

Think of it like a game, where the rules are different depending on the type of magic system.

In a “hard” magic system, the rules and limitations of how someone can use magic are really clear and explained thoroughly. For example, a character may need to say special words or perform specific actions to use their magic, and they may only have a certain amount of magic they can use before needing to rest.

On the other hand, in a “soft” magic system, the rules of magic are not always so clear, and the explanation of magic is more like a mystery. Magic is less about knowing specific rules and more about being something that is mysterious, hard to get, and mysterious.

So, the main difference between the two is that hard magic has clear, established rules and limitations while soft magic is more mysterious and not as defined.

Overall, each type of magic system can be really fun to read about and give us a little bit of magic to explore our imaginations.
