Harvard-Kyoto

Harvard-Kyoto is a way that people write and read words in another language called Sanskrit. It was made by two very smart universities, one in America called Harvard and one in Japan called Kyoto. The idea was to make Sanskrit easier to use by making some simple rules about how to write different sounds.

For example, in Sanskrit, there are three sounds that are all kind of like "sh". They are written differently, but sound similar. So, Harvard-Kyoto made a rule that you can write all of these sounds as one letter "s" with a line on the top.

This way, when people write words in Sanskrit, they can use the same rules and everyone can understand them. It's kind of like having a secret code for writing that everyone who knows the language can use.
