ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hawaiian Kingdom–United States relations

Okay, imagine you have a friend named Hawaii. Hawaii is like a little island nation, and one time a long time ago, another bigger country called the United States wanted to be friends with Hawaii too. So they made a deal where Hawaii gets to be its own country, but the United States gets to help make decisions with them sometimes.

But as time went on, the United States started making more and more of the decisions without asking Hawaii first. It was like the United States was treating Hawaii more like a little brother instead of a real friend.

Eventually, Hawaii realized that the United States was trying to take over and make them a part of the United States instead of being just friends. And that's not what Hawaii wanted. So they tried to break off the friendship with the United States and be their own country again. But it was hard because the United States had already taken over a lot of their land and resources.

So now, some people think that Hawaii should be given back their freedom to be their own country, while some people think it's okay for them to be part of the United States. It's a complicated situation and people have different opinions about it.
