ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hazardous material

Hazardous materials are things that can be harmful to people or the environment if they are not used, stored, or disposed of correctly. These materials can be in the form of gases, liquids, or solids and can be found in many different places, like homes, schools, and factories.

Some examples of hazardous materials are chemicals, such as bleach and gasoline, and radioactive materials, like uranium. When we use these materials, we need to be careful to follow the instructions on the label or from someone who knows how to use them safely. For example, we need to wear protective clothing and make sure we do not mix certain chemicals together or heat them up too much.

When hazardous materials are transported from one place to another, special precautions need to be taken to make sure they do not spill or leak. Large trucks carrying hazardous materials may have special containers or tanks to hold the materials, and drivers may need special training and licenses to transport them safely.

If hazardous materials are not disposed of properly, they can harm the environment, such as polluting the air, water, or soil. Some hazardous materials can even cause health problems, like cancer or respiratory problems in people who are exposed to them.

Overall, hazardous materials are things that can be dangerous if we do not know how to use, store, or dispose of them safely. It is important to always follow the instructions and guidelines given to us and to be aware of the potential hazards around us.
