ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Heavier than air

Well kiddo, some things are light and can fly in the air like butterflies, balloons, and birds. But some things are heavy and cannot fly easily in the air. These heavy things are called "heavier than air".

You know how when you throw a ball into the air it goes up and then falls back down? That's because the ball is heavier than the air around it, so it can't stay up in the air for very long. The same thing happens with airplanes and helicopters. They are heavier than the air around them, but they have ways to stay up in the air and fly.

Airplanes have wings that are shaped like big curved spoons. These wings help lift the plane up into the air and keep it there. When the airplane flies, the air goes over the wings and pushes the airplane up. The faster the airplane goes, the more lift it gets from the wings, and the higher it can fly.

Have you ever seen a helicopter? They have big blades on the top that spin around really fast. This spinning creates lift and helps the helicopter stay up in the air. The pilot can control the blades to make the helicopter go up, down, or sideways.

So even though some things are heavier than air, airplanes and helicopters can still fly by using special things like wings and blades. Cool, huh?
