Hey kiddo, have you ever played with water in a swimming pool or bathtub? Well, scientists sometimes use what they call "heavy liquid" which is a special liquid that's a bit like water, but it's much heavier. This "heavy" liquid is made by mixing two different chemicals together, and when they combine, they make a liquid that's very good at separating things.
Let's imagine you have some rocks and you want to separate them by size. You could try to pick them out one by one, but that would take a long time. Instead, you can put them in the heavy liquid, and the rocks will settle according to their size. The bigger ones will sink to the bottom faster than the smaller ones, and you can easily scoop them out.
This method is called "density separation". The heavy liquid is dense enough to create a noticeable difference in buoyancy between different materials which makes it very handy for separating all sorts of things like minerals, metals, and even archaeological artifacts.
But, remember, kiddo, even though it's called "heavy liquid," it's not actually heavy like a rock or a brick. It just means it's heavier than regular water. And, most importantly, don't play with heavy liquids at home. They're not toys and can be dangerous if used improperly.
