ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hebrew cantillation

Okay kiddo, so have you ever seen those little symbols above Hebrew words when you read them out loud? That's called cantillation! It's kind of like a musical roadmap for singing the words in the right way.

Each cantillation symbol tells us how to sing a different part of the sentence. Some symbols mean we need to go up in pitch, some mean we need to go down, and some mean we need to pause for a little bit.

It's kind of like when we read a story out loud and change our voice for different characters or when there's a question or exclamation. Cantillation helps us understand the meaning behind the Hebrew words and makes them sound even more beautiful when we sing them.

Even though it might seem a little confusing at first, with practice, we can get really good at using cantillation and make our reading of Hebrew extra special.
