ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Helmut Schoeck

Helmut Schoeck was a man who studied how societies work, especially how people act when they are in groups. He believed that sometimes people can be jealous of each other and try to bring others down, which can cause problems in society. Imagine you and your friends are all playing a game, but one of you is really good at it and keeps winning. Some of the other friends might start to feel jealous and try to make the good player lose on purpose, even if it means breaking the rules. This is an example of what Schoeck called “Envy”. He thought that envy could cause a lot of problems in a society, like people not trusting each other or not sharing things fairly. He also believed that it was important for people to work together and not always compete with each other. Just like how everyone needs to work together and follow the rules to play a game and have fun!
