Helots were slaves in ancient Greece. They were usually poor people who sold themselves or their family members into slavery because they had no other way to make money. Helots worked on farms and in mines under their master's control. They were not allowed to own anything, and they could not marry or have their own children. Helots were allowed to keep some of the food they grew or mined, but not much. They were not allowed to leave their master's land without permission and were often treated very badly.
