Hemispherectomy is a big word that means doctors take out half of the brain to help people who have really bad problems with seizures, which are like big electrical storms in their heads.
Can you touch the top of your head? That is where your brain lives. Your brain helps you think, move, and feel things. But sometimes, when someone has too many seizures, half of their brain does not work right and makes them sick.
So, doctors do a very special surgery where they carefully take out one half of the brain to try and stop the seizures. The other half of the brain learns to do all the things that the missing half used to do, like talking, walking, and playing.
After the surgery, the person might need some help, like physical therapy or medicine, but they can still have a good life and do most things that they like to do.
It’s an amazing thing that the brain can do this, and doctors have helped many children and adults improve their lives with hemispherectomy!
