Henry George was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 2, 1839. His father was a sailor who worked on ships travelling around the world. His mother was a housewife who took care of Henry and his two older brothers. Henry grew up in a loving, supportive family, and he was encouraged to pursue his interests in reading and writing. He was an excellent student and was accepted to the University of Pennsylvania when he was only 15 years old. At the university, he studied law, economics, and political science. After graduating, he became a successful journalist and writer. He wrote books to explain his ideas on economics and political reform that would help improve the lives of people around the world. Henry George is remembered for his theories of taxation and for his ideas about land reform. He became a major leader of the Progressive Movement in the United States and helped shape public policy. He passed away in 1897.
