ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hep-Hep riots

Okay kiddo, so a long long time ago in Germany, there were some people called Jews. They were a bit different from other people in some ways, like they had their own religion and culture.

But some other folks didn't like that, and they started to believe some mean and untrue things about the Jews. They said that the Jews weren't really German and that they were greedy and dangerous.

Then one day, in 1819, some people in a town called Würzburg were really angry about the Jews living there. They started shouting "Hep-Hep!" which was supposed to be a kind of chant to chase the Jews away.

The people who were shouting had sticks and stones and they started attacking Jewish homes and businesses. It was like a big, scary riot.

But it didn't stop there, kiddo. Soon other towns started having Hep-Hep riots too. It was like a chain reaction of hate and violence.

Jewish people were hurt and killed, and many were forced to flee their homes and communities. It was a really sad and scary time for them.

Thankfully, things are better now and we know that it's important to treat everyone with kindness and respect, no matter where they come from or what they believe in.
