ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Heritage film

Heritage film is a type of movie that is all about history and tradition. Just like your family has its own special stories and ways of doing things, a heritage film is like a big family movie that tells the story of a group of people or a whole country.

So, imagine that you and your family were making a movie about your grandpa's life. You would probably start by talking to him and finding out about the special things he did when he was younger. You might go visit the places he grew up or spent time in, like his favorite park or a famous restaurant in town.

In a heritage film, the filmmakers do the same thing, but instead of focusing on one person or family, they look at a whole culture or period of time in history. For example, they might make a movie about the Native American people and their traditions, or about the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.

Just like you and your family movie, a heritage film tries to show what it was like to live in a different time or place, and to help us all appreciate the special things that make different cultures unique.
