ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hewing

Hewing is like using a big knife to cut up a log into a shape you like. Imagine you have a big, fat stick that you want to turn into a table leg. Instead of using a saw or a machine, someone could use a big knife called an axe, and methodically chip away at the sides of the stick until it becomes a smooth, rectangular shape that could prop up a table. This process is called hewing. People have been doing this for thousands of years, even before machines were invented. Today, it’s not as common because there are quicker, easier ways to shape wood, but some people still like to do things the old-fashioned way.
