ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hiccup

Hiccup is a funny thing that happens in your body when you breathe in and out really fast and your muscles jump. It's like when you laugh so hard that your tummy jiggles, but with your breathing muscles.

Your body has a special muscle called the diaphragm that helps you breathe. Sometimes, the diaphragm gets a little bit confused and it makes you take in air really fast. When this happens, it causes a short, sharp intake of breath that makes a funny sound – hiccups!

Hiccupping can happen to anyone, even really big grown-ups, and they usually go away on their own after a little while. Some things that can make hiccups go away faster are holding your breath for a little while, taking small sips of water, or having someone scare you (but let's try not to do that too often, okay?).

So don't worry if you get the hiccups – they are just your body having a little bit of fun with your breathing muscles!
