ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hidden file and hidden directory

Alright kiddo, have you ever played hide and seek? Sometimes we hide things from others because we don't want them to see or find it easily. Similarly, sometimes we hide files or folders on the computer because we don't want them to be seen easily.

A hidden file or folder is like a secret. When we make a file or folder "hidden", it doesn't show up like other regular files on our computer.

A hidden file looks like a regular file, but it has a special setting that makes it invisible by default. It can be found in a folder, but you won't see it unless you choose to show hidden files on your computer. For example, if we want to hide a file that contains secret information or a list of things we don't want anyone else to see, we can make that file a "hidden" file.

A hidden directory is like a whole secret room with many hidden things inside. It’s just like a folder, but it’s set to be hidden, so you have to know how to find it. It's like a secret room that only certain people are allowed to go into. For example, if we want to hide a folder that contains all of our secret files, we can make that folder a "hidden" folder.

In summary, a hidden file or folder is like a secret that only you know about, and you can choose to show or hide it whenever you need it.
