ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Historical determinism

Historical determinism means that the events and actions that happen in history are all pre-determined or already decided. It's like a really long movie where the ending has already been figured out, and no matter what the characters do, the ending will always be the same.

People who believe in historical determinism think that everything in history happens because of past events and actions (kind of like a domino effect), and that we can't change anything because it has already been decided. It's like the events of the past dictate what will happen in the future.

For example, let's say there was a king who made a bad decision in the past that resulted in a war. People who believe in historical determinism would say that the war was always going to happen because of that bad decision, and that there was nothing anyone could do to prevent it.

Some people don't like the idea of historical determinism because it takes away the idea of free will and the ability to change the future. They believe that we can learn from the past and make better decisions to prevent bad things from happening again in the future.
