ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of Cross-Strait Relations

Many years ago, there were two places called China and Taiwan. They used to be together, but then they had some disagreements and decided to split up. China thought that Taiwan still belonged to them, but Taiwan thought they should be independent and have their own government.

For a while, China and Taiwan did not talk to each other. They did not even allow people to travel back and forth between the two places. However, over time, they started to talk more and more.

Sometimes they would have good talks, and sometimes they would have bad talks. Sometimes the leaders of China and Taiwan would even meet each other. But they could not agree on whether Taiwan should be independent or not.

Nowadays, the relationship between China and Taiwan is still complicated. They sometimes trade with each other and sometimes argue about who has control over certain places. But they are always trying to find ways to communicate and work together, even if they cannot agree on everything.
