ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of Germany since 1945

Okay kiddo, after World War II ended in 1945, Germany was split into four different parts, like a cake divided into four pieces. These pieces were controlled by different countries - the US, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union.

The sections controlled by the US, Britain, and France joined together and formed what was called West Germany, while the section controlled by the Soviet Union became East Germany.

West Germany became a democracy, which means that the people were able to vote for their leaders and have a say in how the country was run. East Germany, on the other hand, was controlled by the Soviet Union and was a communist country.

In the 1960s, West Germany became one of the most powerful economies in Europe, thanks to its hardworking people and strong industries. This was called the "economic miracle" or "Wirtschaftswunder" in German.

East Germany, on the other hand, was struggling with a weak economy and a lack of freedom for its citizens. In 1989, people in East Germany protested and demanded more freedom. This led to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the symbol of the divide between East and West Germany, and ultimately the reunification of Germany in 1990.

Since reunification, Germany has become an even stronger economic power and a leader in European politics. It has faced challenges such as integrating the former East Germany into its economy and society, dealing with the rise of far-right political groups, and managing its role in the European Union. But through it all, Germany has remained a successful and important country in the world.
