ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of Photography (journal)

Okay, so you know how you have a camera on your phone and you can take pictures of anything you want? Well, a long time ago, people didn't have phones with cameras. They had to use something called a camera that was big and heavy and took a long time to take a picture.

The first camera was called a camera obscura and it was made in the 1600s. It was just a box with a small hole in it that let in light. When the light came through the hole, it made an upside-down picture on the other side of the box.

Then, in the 1800s, people figured out how to take pictures that would stay forever by using something called film. They would put the film into the camera and when they took a picture, the film would collect the light and make a picture.

The first pictures were black and white and not very clear, but over time, people got better at making cameras and pictures. They could take pictures of people, animals, and even landscapes.

People would use these pictures to remember important moments in their lives and to see what the world looked like in different times.

Nowadays, we can take pictures with our phones or other small cameras and share them with people all over the world instantly. But it all started with the first camera obscura and the idea of capturing moments through pictures.
