Atheism is the belief that nobody is real or worthy of worship. People can hold this belief for different reasons. Throughout history, atheists have been treated differently by different societies. In some cultures, atheists were even punished for their beliefs. This happened because many people and governments believed that a belief in a god or gods was necessary for being a good person and for having a successful society.
In the West, atheism became more accepted from the 1600s onwards, as the ideas of science and the power of reason began to be taken more seriously. Over time, atheism became more and more accepted in society. Now, atheists are protected by law in many countries, and in some places, people can even come together to share their beliefs and have atheist organizations.
