ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of geomagnetism

Geomagnetism is about the magnetism of the Earth. This means that the Earth has a big invisible magnetic force field around it, like an invisible blanket. It protects us from the sun's charged particles and helps us with our compasses to find our way.

A long time ago, people didn't know about this magnetism. They just knew that rocks with a certain shape made of iron would stick together. They called these rocks "magnets". Then someone discovered that these magnets always point to the same direction: the North Pole!

This was a big deal because it meant that people could always know which way was north, even if they were far away from where they knew. Then, scientists realized that the earth had its own magnet, and that was why these magnets always pointed north. This is how we discovered geomagnetism.

Over time, scientists have studied this magnetic field of the Earth more closely. They have discovered that the magnetic field is not constant and changes over time. Sometimes it flips, and the north pole becomes the south pole!

Scientists have also learned that the pattern of these changes can be studied to unlock secrets about the Earth's history. For instance, rocks found at different layers of earth have different magnetic polarities, and by using them, scientists can estimate how long ago the rock came to be. By learning about these magnetic patterns, we can learn more about the history of the Earth and what our planet was like millions of years ago.

In summary, geomagnetism is the study of the Earth's magnetic field, which helps us understand our planet's history and also helps us find our way.
