ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of lesbianism in the United States

Okay kiddo, so a long time ago in the United States, people didn't really talk about girls who liked other girls in a romantic way. It was like it didn't exist. But, some girls still loved other girls and didn't want to keep it a secret anymore.

In the 1920s, there were some fancy parties called "lesbian balls." These were really fun gatherings where women could dance and flirt with other women without being judged. But, the police didn't like these parties and they made them illegal.

Later, in the 1950s and 60s, being gay was seen as something bad or wrong. People who were gay were kicked out of their jobs and homes, and even put in jail! It was very unfair and scary for them.

But then, in the 1970s, women started to speak up about their love for other women. They formed groups and clubs where they could talk about their feelings and be supported by others who felt the same way. This was called the "Lesbian Feminist" movement.

In the 1980s, the fight for equal rights for lesbians and gay men often went hand in hand. There were protests and marches to help people understand that it's okay to love who you want and that everyone deserves the same rights.

Today, there are still some people who don't understand or accept the idea of lesbianism, but there are also many people who do. Some states have even legalized gay marriage, which means that two women (or two men) can get married and be recognized as a couple by the government. It's important to remember that everyone deserves to love who they want, and that love is love, no matter what.
