History of live action role-playing games

Okay kiddo, have you ever played pretend or make-believe with your friends? Well, live action role-playing games (LARP) is a game where people dress up in costumes and act out a story just like you do when you're playing pretend.

LARP has been around for a while, some people say it started in the 1970s with tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. But the first recorded LARP was in the 1980s in Europe. It wasn't until the 1990s that LARP became popular in the United States.

At first, LARP was just a small thing that people did in their backyards or parks with their friends. But soon people started organizing bigger events and renting out entire campsites just for LARP.

As LARP grew, people started creating their own worlds and stories to play in. Some LARP games are based on historical events or fiction like medieval times or the Lord of the Rings. Some are completely made up and allow people to create their own characters and stories.

One thing that sets LARP apart from other games is that it's all about immersion. That means when you're playing, you have to stay in character and imagine that you're really in the story. This includes things like speaking in an accent and using props like swords or potions.

Today, LARP is still popular and has even become a competitive sport called Boffer Battles. People from all over the world play LARP and attend large events known as LARPcons. It's a fun way to use your imagination and creativity while also making friends and having a good time.
