Slavery was the practice of forcing people to work without pay and against their will. In the 1800s, there was slavery in Utah, but it was mostly limited to Native Americans. The United States government had given permission to some Utah settlers to have Native American slaves, but these slaves had more rights than people usually think of when it comes to slaves. For example, Native American slaves in Utah were often allowed to live with their families, and keep any money they made. In 1862, the US government passed a law that banned slavery, but it did not completely end it in Utah. It wasn't until 1869 that Utah finally made it illegal for anyone to own another person as a slave.
