ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of the Arab–Israeli conflict

Once upon a time, there was a land called Palestine that was home to both Jewish people and Arab people. But, the Jewish people wanted to have their own country called Israel, and the Arabs didn't want to share the land.

In 1947, the United Nations decided to split up the land between the Jews and Arabs. This made some people happy and some people angry. In 1948, Israel declared itself its own country, and many Arab countries went to war with Israel to try to take their land back.

The war lasted for a long time and many people were hurt or had to leave their homes. Eventually, they agreed to stop fighting, but there were still disagreements and conflicts. One of the big issues was that both the Jews and Arabs wanted control of Jerusalem, which is a very special city to both groups of people.

Over time, there have been more wars and negotiations, but they haven't been able to reach a permanent solution yet. Some people think that the best solution is to have two separate countries, one for the Jews and one for the Arabs, but others don't agree.

So, today, there is still tension and conflict between the Jewish people and the Arab people in the land of Israel and Palestine.
