History of the English fiscal system

Okay champ, so a long time ago in England, the king needed money to do stuff like build castles and fight wars. To get money, he would ask the people for it. This was called taxation.

At first, the king would just ask for a certain amount of money from each person, but that caused problems because some people were richer than others, so they had to pay more. To make it fair, they started using a tax called a property tax, which meant people with more money had to pay more taxes.

But then, the king realized that he needed more money than just what the property tax could bring in. So, he created new taxes on things like imports, exports, and even windows! The people didn't like these new taxes, and there were lots of protests and even some riots.

Over time, the government made changes to the tax system, trying to make it more fair and to collect more money. One big change was the creation of the income tax, where people had to pay a percentage of their earnings as taxes. This is still how taxes work in England today.

So, that's the history of the English fiscal system, or how the government has collected money through taxes over the years. It's been a bumpy road with lots of changes and conflicts, but it's helped pay for things the country needs.
