History of the Green Party of the United States

The Green Party of the United States is a political party that was started in the 1990s to represent the interests of people who want to protect the environment and create a more sustainable world. The Green Party is not just one organization, but rather a coalition of groups that stand for the same values. These values include: preservation of the environment, social justice and economic justice, grassroots democracy, nonviolence, respect for diversity, and decentralization of power.

The Green Party was inspired by a similar political party in Europe called the "Greens," which had gained traction as a major political force in many countries by the late 1980s. In the United States, a group of environmental and progressive activists wanted to create a similar party that would be dedicated to similar values.

In 1991, the Green Committees of Correspondence was formed, the first official Green Party organization in the United States, and in 1995, the National Association of State Green Parties (NASGP) was formed. The NASGP was an alliance of state-level Green Parties, who began to coordinate their efforts and fight for issues like environmental protection, universal healthcare, and renewable energy.

The Green Party officially became a recognized political party in some states in 2000, and since then, the political movement and their candidates have been very active in the political process. In the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election, two Green Party candidates were on the ballot: Howie Hawkins and Dario Hunter. Although neither candidate was elected, they both had the support of hundreds of thousands of Americans who voted for them in various states, demonstrating the power of the Green Party in the U.S. political arena.
