ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of the Supreme Court of the United States

The Supreme Court is a group of special people who are really good at knowing the rules of our country. They are like the boss of all the other judges, and they help decide what is fair and what is not fair when people disagree. The Supreme Court was made a really long time ago -- over 200 years ago -- when our country was just starting out.

In the beginning, there were only a few judges in the Supreme Court, but today there are nine. These judges are called "justices" and they are really important because they get to decide what is okay and not okay for our whole country.

The Supreme Court takes its job very seriously, and they always try to make the best decision for everyone. They look at all the facts, listen to both sides of the argument, and then choose what they think is right.

In the past, the Supreme Court has made some very important decisions that have changed our country forever. For example, they helped make it illegal to have separate schools for black and white children, and they helped decide a very big election a long time ago.

The Supreme Court is always working hard to make sure our country is the best it can be, and we are lucky to have them!
