ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of the euro

Imagine you have 5 different kinds of candy, and you want to be able to share them more easily with your friends who live in different countries. But each friend likes a different kind of candy, and each country uses its own kind of money to buy things.

To solve this problem, some grown-ups in Europe decided to create a special kind of money that everyone in Europe could use called the Euro. They started talking about it in the 1960s but it took a long time to figure out how to make it work for everyone.

Finally, in 1999, the Euro officially started being used by some countries in Europe. It was like a new toy that everyone wanted to try out! But not every country decided to use the Euro right away, and some still don't use it at all.

The Euro is like a big piggy bank that all the countries who use it put their money into. Each country has its own little compartment in the piggy bank, but they all use the same kind of money when they buy things from each other.

Sometimes the value of the Euro goes up or down compared to other kinds of money, like the dollar or the yen. This can make it harder or easier for some countries to buy things from other countries. But overall, the Euro has made it easier for people in Europe to share their candy and buy things from each other.
