History of the petroleum industry in Canada (oil sands and heavy oil)

So, a looong time ago, people found out that there was this black gooey stuff called petroleum that could be used to make things like gasoline to power cars and airplanes.

In Canada, they found a special kind of petroleum called heavy oil that was really thick and gooey, almost like tar. They also discovered oil sands, which is basically sand mixed with a bunch of that heavy oil stuff.

People started digging and drilling for this stuff in Canada, but it wasn't always easy. They had to come up with special methods to extract the heavy oil from the sand or rocks, because it was too thick to just pump out like regular oil.

Eventually, they figured out how to heat the sand and separate the oil from it, and this made it easier to get at the oil. It also made a lot of money for the people who owned the oil companies.

But, there are some problems with getting oil from the sands and heavy oil. It can be really expensive to extract, and it can have some negative impacts on the environment. So, not everyone thinks it's a great idea to keep relying on this kind of oil.

That's the history of the petroleum industry in Canada, with a focus on oil sands and heavy oil.
