Women have been living in the United Kingdom since ancient times, when they were called 'Britons'. Over the centuries, the roles of women in the UK have changed a lot. In the past, women couldn't go to school like boys could and they mostly stayed at home to look after the children, clean the house and cook for the family.
In the early 19th century, it became more common for women to work outside the home. They fought for the right to vote, which was granted in 1928. This meant they could have their say in elections and be part of the government.
In the 20th century, women gained more rights. They were allowed to go to university, join the military and become doctors and lawyers. Today, women in the UK enjoy most of the same rights as men and have many opportunities to pursue their goals.
