ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Holocaust denial

Imagine that you were playing a game with your friends and you won. Imagine that one of your friends did not want to believe that you won fair and square, they said that you cheated even though you did not, and they kept saying it over and over again. This is kind of like what some people do with the Holocaust.

The Holocaust was a very bad thing that happened a long time ago. It happened during World War II, where the leader of Germany, named Adolf Hitler, did not like Jewish people and wanted to get rid of them by killing them. Many other people who were seen as different, like homosexuals, disabled people, and gypsies, were also killed by the Nazis, who were followers of Hitler.

Now, some people might think that the Holocaust never happened. They would say things like "It was all made up!" or "The Jews just wanted sympathy and attention!" This is called Holocaust denial. It is like they are saying that the game (the Holocaust) did not happen, even though many people, including those who lived through it and historians who have studied it, know that it did.

People who deny the Holocaust might have different reasons for doing so. Some might deny it because they don't want to believe that something so horrible could really happen. Others might deny it because they have prejudiced beliefs or hate against certain groups of people. Whatever their reason is, it is important to remember that Holocaust denial is not true and it is disrespectful to the people who suffered and died because of it.
