ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Homonationalism

Homonationalism is a very complicated word, but we can try to understand it. So, basically, people who are attracted to the same gender (like two boys or two girls) sometimes have to deal with discrimination and prejudice (which means people don't like them just because they love someone who's the same gender as they are). But some people think that being attracted to the same gender is okay, and they want to support these people. They think that everyone should be treated equally, no matter who they love.

However, some people who support LGBT rights (that's what we call people who are attracted to the same gender) do it in a certain way that some people think is not very good. They act like they are the "good gays" who are better than others. They think that LGBT people from other countries or cultures are not as good as them because they are different in some way. They might say things like "we're not like them" or "we're more civilized". They might even support their country's government or military even if they treat LGBT people badly.

This way of supporting LGBT rights is called homonationalism. It means that people are using LGBT rights to support their own country or culture, instead of really helping all LGBT people everywhere. It's like saying "we're good, but they're bad". This is not a very good way to support LGBT people because it doesn't treat everyone equally. Everyone should be treated the same, no matter where they come from or what culture they have. So, we should try to support LGBT people all over the world, not just in our own country or culture.
