Homosexuality in the DSM

One of the jobs of doctors and scientists is to study the ways that people think, feel and behave. They often use a book called the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to help them with their work.

For a very long time, many people believed that being homosexual was a mental disorder. This means that people thought it was something wrong or abnormal about the way a person thought or felt about love or relationships.

However, over time, people began to understand that being homosexual is just another way that people can be in love, just like how some people love boys or girls. And just like how some people have blue eyes while others have brown eyes, being homosexual is just one more way that people can be different from each other.

So, in the year 1973, the DSM was revised to say that homosexuality was not a mental disorder. This was because people started to understand and accept that being homosexual is just a natural and normal way for some people to feel, and it is not something wrong or bad about them.

Nowadays, we know that people can love whoever they want, no matter their gender. It's all about respecting and accepting each other for who we are!
