A horseshoe vortex is a type of swirling air pattern created when two currents of air move around something in opposite directions. It's called a horseshoe because the pattern of air looks like the horseshoe shape of a horseshoe! This type of vortex is often seen behind large objects like airplanes, buildings and cars. The swirling of the air creates pressure differences which can make the air move in unexpected and turbulent ways. Horseshoe vortices can cause turbulence for airplanes, making it more difficult to fly.
