ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hot flash

Okay kiddo, so you know how sometimes you get really hot and sweaty, even though it's not that hot outside? Well, grown-up ladies can feel the same way sometimes.

But instead of being because of the weather, it's because their bodies are going through a change called menopause. During this time, their bodies stop making as much estrogen, which is a hormone that helps control their temperature.

So sometimes, all of a sudden, they'll feel really, really hot, and start sweating a lot, even if they're in a cool place. This is called a "hot flash."

It might only last a minute or two, but it can be really uncomfortable, like if you're wearing too many clothes on a hot day. Some ladies might also feel dizzy or have a fast heartbeat during a hot flash.

So when a grown-up lady tells you she's having a hot flash, be extra nice to her and offer to help her cool down. Maybe you can give her a cold drink or turn on a fan for her.
