Hydroelectric power in the United States

Hydroelectric power in the United States is a way to make electricity from moving water. It's like when you play with water and it makes a swirling motion, but instead of just playing, we use the power of the swirling water to make electricity.

First, we need a big dam or a wall that we put across a river. This dam makes a big lake behind it called a reservoir. When the reservoir is full of water, we can turn on a special machine called turbines, which look like big propellers. When the water from the reservoir flows through these turbines, it makes them turn, kind of like wind turning the blades of a windmill.

When the turbines turn, they create energy that can be turned into electricity, which can power homes and businesses. The electricity travels from the dam through wires on big poles to the places where people live and work.

Hydroelectric power is a good way to make electricity because the water is a renewable resource, which means it is replaced by nature's cycle of rain and evaporation. But making hydropower can also affect the animals that live in and around the river, so we have to be careful when building dams and using hydropower.
