ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hyperopia

Hyperopia is a big word that means you have a hard time seeing things that are close to you. Imagine that you look through a very strong magnifying glass and things look really big and far away. That’s how people with hyperopia see things, except they can’t just take the magnifying glass away to see normal again.

This happens because their eyes are not shaped the right way. When light goes into your eye, it should be focused on a spot on your retina (which is kind of like a movie screen at the back of your eye). But if you have hyperopia, the light is focused behind your retina instead of on it, which makes things look blurry when they are close.

But don’t worry! A doctor can check your eyes and give you glasses or contacts that help you see things clearly again, even when they are close to you. And if you wear your glasses or contacts like you are supposed to, your eyes will be healthy and happy.
