Hyperprolactinemia

Hyperprolactinemia is when there is too much of a special type of hormone called prolactin in your body. Your body naturally makes prolactin to help with things like making breast milk and regulating your menstrual cycle (if you are a girl). But sometimes, for different reasons, your body makes too much prolactin, which can cause problems.

The most common symptoms of hyperprolactinemia are:
- Girls might have irregular periods or they might not have periods at all.
- Both boys and girls might feel like they have less energy or they are tired all the time.
- Boys might have trouble getting an erection (when their pee-pee gets hard) and they might not be able to have babies.
- Both boys and girls might have a headache or vision problems (like trouble seeing things up close or far away).

Hyperprolactinemia can be caused by different things, like certain medications, head injuries, and bigger problems with the pituitary gland (an important part of your brain that releases hormones).

If someone has hyperprolactinemia, their doctor might do some tests to find out why they have too much prolactin. Depending on the cause, the doctor might recommend different treatments to help lower the prolactin levels in the body.
