ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hypocorrection

Hypocorrection is when someone gets something wrong and tries to fix it, but overcorrects and ends up making a different mistake. It's like when you're drawing a picture and you make a mistake, so you try to erase it, but you accidentally erase too much and now the picture looks weird.

For example, if someone mispronounces a word and then tries to say it correctly by putting emphasis on the wrong syllable, they're hypocorrecting.

Hypocorrection can happen because we want to do the right thing, but we're not exactly sure what that is. It's okay to make mistakes, but it's important to keep practicing and learning so we can improve and avoid making the same mistakes over and over.
