ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hypot

Hypot is a math function that helps you find the length or distance of a straight line between two points on a graph or coordinate system. It works like magic because it can find this distance even if the line is tilted or diagonal!

Imagine you have a toy car at one point and another toy car at a different point on a map. You want to know the shortest distance between the two cars. You know where the cars are located because someone marked the points on the map with an X. If you use your finger to follow the line between the two X's, this looks like a sloped path. Hypot helps you find the length of that sloped path.

Hypot is like counting steps. Let's say you have a toy car at point (3,4), and you want to find the distance to another car at point (5,7) on a coordinate system. It's like starting at (3,4) and takes 5 steps to the right and 7 steps up to reach (5,7).

Hypot takes away the need to count steps, and uses math to give us the answer of about 3.61 (rounded to two decimals). Now you can comfortably tell your friend that there is a distance of about 3.61 between the two cars.
