Hypothyroidism

Okay kiddo, let me explain hypothyroidism to you.

Your thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck. It produces a hormone called thyroxine (T4) that helps regulate your body's metabolism. Metabolism is like your body's engine that helps it do everything like move, breathe, grow taller and maintain a healthy weight.

Sometimes, the thyroid gland may not produce enough thyroxine hormone. When this happens, your body slows down, and that's called hypothyroidism.

When you have hypothyroidism, you may feel tired and sluggish and might gain weight even while eating healthily. You may also feel cold even in warm temperatures and have dry skin, constipation or feel depressed.

Doctors diagnose hypothyroidism by doing a blood test to measure the level of thyroxine hormone in your body.

The good news is that hypothyroidism is treatable with medication. Your doctor can prescribe a medicine called levothyroxine to help your body make more thyroxine hormone. Taking this medicine every day can help you feel better and have more energy so that you can do all the activities you love!
