ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

ISO/IEC 8859

ISO/IEC 8859 is a fancy name for a set of rules that tell computers how to use different characters, like letters, numbers, and symbols, so that people all around the world can use them to write messages on their computers.

Imagine we are all in a big playground and we all speak different languages. Some of us speak Chinese, some speak Spanish, some speak Arabic, and so on. Even though we all use different alphabets and characters, we still want to be able to write messages to each other.

That's where ISO/IEC 8859 comes in. It's like a special playground rulebook that helps us use different characters correctly. So, for example, if I want to write a message in Spanish to someone who speaks Chinese, the rulebook tells me which Spanish characters I can use on my computer and how they will look when the message is sent to them.

ISO/IEC 8859 is like a big universal language that helps computers communicate with each other no matter what language we speak. Without these rules, we wouldn't be able to send messages to anyone who speaks a different language.
