ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Iberia

Iberia is a very old name for a big piece of land in the southwest corner of Europe. This land is made up of two countries, Spain and Portugal. Many, many years ago, there were lots of different groups of people who lived on this land, like the Celts, the Romans, and the Visigoths. They fought with each other and traded with each other and sometimes even married each other!

Later on, a very important city called Cordoba became the center of a great empire called the Caliphate of Cordoba. This empire was ruled by Muslim leaders who had come from North Africa. They built beautiful palaces and mosques and made important scientific discoveries. But they also fought with other Muslim groups for power, and eventually the Caliphate broke apart into smaller kingdoms.

In the 1400s, something really important happened in Iberia. Two big kingdoms, Castile and Aragon, joined together when their rulers got married. This was like two big families getting together and becoming even bigger! These kingdoms then started exploring the world, and they sent famous sailors like Christopher Columbus to discover new lands, like America.

But not everyone in Iberia was happy. The Muslims and the Jews who had lived there for hundreds of years were treated unfairly by the new rulers. Many of them were forced to leave or were killed. This was a very sad time in Iberia's history.

Today, Iberia is a very important place in Europe. People from all over the world come to visit Spain and Portugal, to see the old castles and the beautiful beaches, and to taste the delicious food. But we should never forget the many different cultures and people who have lived in Iberia over the centuries, and how they have shaped this special place.
