ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Illusion of explanatory depth

Illusion of explanatory depth is when we think we understand something, even though we really don't understand all of it. For example, if a five-year-old was asked to explain how a computer works, they might say that it is made up of bits and pieces, but they probably wouldn't be able to explain what all of those pieces are, or how they work together. Even though they can describe some of its parts, they do not truly have a deep understanding of what it does and how it works. It looks like they understand, but actually they don't.
