ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Immersed submanifold

Okay kiddo, let's imagine you're swimming in a big pool. You are a small person in a big space, just like a submanifold is a small space inside a bigger one. Now, let's say I put a bunch of floating pool toys in the pool. Those toys are like the bigger space, and you are the submanifold.

When we talk about an "immersed" submanifold, we mean that your whole body is under the water and it's kind of like you're stuck there. You can't come up above the water's surface because you are "immersed" in it.

Similarly, an immersed submanifold is a small space that is completely inside of a bigger space, and it can't poke out or escape. It's stuck there, immersed in the larger space.

Does that make sense to you?
