ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

In loco parentis

In loco parentis means that someone who is not your mommy or daddy (like a teacher or a coach) is responsible for taking care of you just like your mommy or daddy would.

It's kind of like when you go to school or a sports camp, the grown-ups in charge have to keep you safe and help you if you get hurt. They have to make sure you eat your lunch, go to the bathroom when you need to, and make sure you don't get too sad or upset.

Just like a mommy or daddy would do everything they can to take care of you, so do the grown-ups in charge. They have to make sure you are safe and happy just like your mommy or daddy would.
