ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Inborn errors of metal metabolism

Okay, imagine your body is like a car that needs the right fuel to run smoothly. Your car needs gasoline to run, and your body needs chemicals called metals for lots of different jobs, like helping you grow big and strong, making your blood work right, and keeping your brain working well.

But sometimes, just like your car might have trouble if you put in the wrong gas, your body can have trouble with metals too. When your body has trouble using or getting rid of metals like copper, iron, or zinc, this is called an inborn error of metal metabolism.

This can happen because of a problem with the way your body makes or uses enzymes, which are special chemicals that help your body do its jobs. Enzymes need metals like copper or iron to work correctly, so if there's a problem with your enzymes, you might have too much or too little of these metals in your body.

Some people are born with these problems, which means their body has trouble with metals right from the start. Other people might not have any trouble until they're older, maybe because they get sick or start eating the wrong foods.

There are lots of different types of inborn errors of metal metabolism, and they can affect different parts of your body. Some might cause you to have seizures or tremors, or have trouble walking or talking. Others might make you more likely to get infections or have trouble with your vision.

Doctors can test for these problems with special blood tests or genetic tests, which can help figure out what's going on in your body. And even though it can be scary to have a problem like this, there are treatments available that can help you feel better and live a healthy life.
