Incroyables and Merveilleuses

Okay kiddo, remember when we talked about people who lived a long time ago, like in the 1700s and 1800s? Well, back then in France, there were some very fashionable people called the incroyables and merveilleuses.

The incroyables (pronounced "en-kwah-ya-bl") were the men and the merveilleuses (pronounced "mair-vay-yuhz") were the women. They were known for wearing really fancy and extravagant clothes.

The incroyables wore fancy jackets called tailcoats that had really long tails that went almost to their feet. They also wore really big collars and cuffs on their shirts, and they often carried canes or walking sticks. They also had really crazy hairstyles with long hair in the back and short hair on top.

The merveilleuses wore really pretty dresses that were tight at the top and really big at the bottom. They also wore fancy hats with feathers and big hairstyles with curls and ribbons.

Both the incroyables and merveilleuses liked to go to parties and show off their fancy clothes and hairstyles. They were really popular and everyone wanted to dress like them. Some people even thought they were a bit silly for wearing such fancy clothes.

But today, we still talk about the incroyables and merveilleuses as examples of what fashion was like a long time ago in France.
